Food Shop

For those of you looking for something a little different, check out RED, i.e. Read, Eat, Dream, - the key words that sum up this Feltrinelli concept store which opened in Piazza Gae Aulenti, underneath the Unicredit building which towers over all the other buildings in the new Porta Nuova complex. RED is a spacious, unique and bright store, where in addition to the books adorning the shelves and tables, there are  numerous stationery gadgets as well as wine and beer on sale. As well as being a book shop and mini supermarket, RED is also a bar and restaurant where you can order something at the bar or lounge about on one of the large armchairs or sit at a table, or simply get one of the waiters to serve you something from the menu. The atmosphere is very laid back, and mornings and afternoons are the best time to go to RED to spend a few hours alone, or with someone, browsing through and buying some of the many books on display. Why not settle back in one of the chairs in RED to enjoy your book or go outside into the piazza and sit at one of the tables. Otherwise you can fire up your PC or tablet and use the free wifi service (you will need the password so be prepared to buy something). Going to RED is also a great way to explore Piazza Gae Aulenti, which is becoming a busy hub, especially for tourists, thanks to the opening of Grom (ice cream shop), Sephora, Nike Store and Esselunga. For those of you that love walking through the streets of the city centre, you can go from Piazza Gae Aulenti up through  Corso Como to Via Pontevetero thanks to the pedestrian walkways and from there it is a five minute walk to Piazza Duomo and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

I Pesciolini is a fishmonger, restaurant and bar all rolled into one. The young guys behind the counter will clean and prepare whatever is on sale from among the wide selection of very fresh fish and crustaceans they have on offer. If you are not quite sure how to cook it, just ask them and they will provide you with detailed yet simple instructions. If you don't feel like cooking they have a good selection of raw and cooked fish dishes which you can either eat on the premises (inside or al fresco at the tables on the pavement) or that you can simply take away. Take a look at their website for further details. Pesciolni is also a great place for an aperatif - why not try their delicious oysters with a glass of crisp white wine.

We think this is one of the best cake shops in Milan. Whether or not you love chocolate, you must try Ernst Knam's desserts and chocolates! There is a reason why he is known as the "King of Chocolate" in the world of reality TV.  The sacher cake is exceptional, the three chocolate mousse (his signature piece made from white, gianduia and plain chocolate) is mouthwatering as is the pear, almond and chocolate cake.If you want a specific cake, say for a dinner party with friends, don't forget to reserve it in the morning - especially at weekends as there is less choice Saturday afternoon

Yet another novelty in Viale Piave. A fantastic shop that makes its own biscuits, decorated cakes, cupcakes and glutin free products. It also sells cake decoratig and patisserie products: food colouring, piping bags, in other words all that you need to make novelty cakes for Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc. For those of you who know London well, it is like Jane Asher in Cale Street (www.janeasher.com). I miss it and now I can finally find the same products.

Sant Ambroeus is a must when visiting Milan. In-house dining maybe targeted at business clientele, but the mignon cakes, biscuits and coffee make it well worth a visit. You don't even have to break the bank if you stand and are served at the bar. It is a delight just to look at the amazing cakes in the window created by Sant Ambroeus' talented patisserie chefs.
