This 1.6km2 expanse of water is not technically in Milan, however, it is situated close to Linate airport and therefore a 20 minute drive from the town centre. Originally built in the 1920s to land seaplanes, the area is now used for recreational purposes and is often referred by the locals as the Milanese coast ("il mare dei milanese"). Picnic areas and benches have been added over the years and numerous water sports can be practised here (canoeing, sailing, water ski-ing, cable ski, kayaking, windsurfing). The Municipality also organises numerous events, festivals and concerts here during the year (see website for more details).Idroscalo also boasts:a Beach ("Spiaggia") - during the summer months you can stretch out on the beach located on the east bank, or swim in the water. Sun beds and umbrellas can be rented and a life guard is on duty. Swimmers are not allowed to swim in any other parts of Idroscalo. Dolly Park - this play area is for children aged 2 to 13 and has trampolines, a castle and a play area with coloured plastic balls. Villaggio del Bambino - here children aged 3 and up are given the possibility to let their imaginations roam while playing with recycled plastic and recyclable materials. Green Bike - adults and children can rent bicycles at the Strongbow Gold Beach (Zona Punta dell'Est) for a small charge. Please see the website for costs and further details. The Lega Navale Italiana also has a base here and there is also the Idroscalo Club Sports Centre which offers a wide range of sports.
